Maypole dancing has been a cherished tradition on the Wood Street Village Green for many years. The village green, steeped in history, has witnessed these lively and colorful celebrations since as early as 1828. Let’s delve into the enchanting world of maypole dancing and the vibrant festivities that grace this picturesque setting.

Wood Street Village May Day Celebrations

The maypole, a tall and permanent mast, stands proudly on the green. On May Day, this iconic pole becomes the focal point for joyous gatherings. As the sun bathes the green in golden hues, villagers join hands in circular dances around the maypole, weaving intricate patterns. Their laughter mingles with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, creating an atmosphere of pure delight.

In 1937, the village came alive with celebrations to honor King George VI’s Coronation. Photographs and records from that time capture the spirit of unity and merriment. Hundreds of people gathered, their hearts light, as they twirled and skipped around the maypole, celebrating both the occasion and their tight-knit community.

Fast forward to the present day, and the tradition continues.  On May 3rd, the Horticultural Society plant sale kicks off the festivities at 11 am, followed by the enchanting maypole dancing at noon.

So, imagine the sun filtering through leaves (we hope!), ribbons swirling, and laughter echoing—a timeless scene where tradition dances hand in hand with joy. Wood Street Village Green remains a place where community bonds are woven as intricately as the maypole itself, and the spirit of celebration thrives.
